    Default Sudden Inspiration

Mike Compton plays Dusty Miller on a video on his website. It is fantastic. That tune really never did much for me, even though there are many fine renditions. But Compton can really pull a good deep, rich tone with his great right hand. Just saw it. And I am inspired to learn to play it correctly, rather than my cheap jam session version.

Have you ever heard the perfect rendition of a certain tune that gave you chills...and sudden inspiration to play it right on the mandolin? Mike Compton's Dusty Miller is it today!

Is it this one Bob ? - http://youtu.be/bdxLI9r-2K0 I've had that clip on my PC for a while now. It's one of my favourite tunes & i was looking for a good version.I think that Mike C's is about the best i've found on YouTube. Shad Cobb does a terrific job with the Fiddle part,

I think Mike has another more recent Dusty Miller video -- I thought I saw it on the Taterbug mando facebook site -- its a solo effort? But the technique he uses is on both are same -- the density of sound that he produces is pretty remarkable.

Oh yes, many times have I had this! Examples being: I Am A Pilgrim from Tone Poems by Grisman & Rice; Bluegrass Stomp by Grisman & Watson - i heard that tune a whole different way and Rory Gallacher's Going To My Home Town by Luke Plumb's group Funky String Band. I heard that song and the mandolin part in a way that inspired me do something of my own with it.

Herschel Sizemore's "Grey Eagle" did it to me.

Compton does absolutely nothing for me, but the top link on that video is to David Grier, who I could listen to for hours. Just about anything he does solo drives me right to my guitar until I realize that I will never be able to get 1/10th of his sound.

From Denny Gies - "Herschel Sizemore's "Grey Eagle" did it to me." .That's a finger buster for sure, but it was his classic tune "Rebecca" that was a 'must learn' tune for me,
