Here's a recent attempt at an F4-ish burst.

I'd say you stuck the landing, Andrew! Very well executed. I prefer the more subtle, diffused bursts, and this one is near perfect.

Beautiful, Andrew! How about some details; hand rubbed? Type of dye? Top coat etc. Very shiny, too...

Thanks folks! It's oil varnish, buffed out. It gets a little less shiny over time--a little softer look than lacquer. The dye is Transtints in alcohol, hand-rubbed. This is the first 'burst in years where I haven't sprayed any of the dye. I like that look, but it's taken me a while to get to a point where I'm reasonably happy with my results.

Looks like a cherry cola burst..... delicious. Garcia would approve. Awesome original inlay, it has a lot of interest to it.

Andrew, your work just inspires me. Nicely done. What brand of varnish, or did you make your own?

One of the finest hand-rubbed vignettes I've seen -- brilliant work, Andrew!

Beautiful mandolin, Andrew. Did you follow the Condino video for that?

Wow, thanks folks! Bill, your comment means a great deal to me, having seen your sunbursts! The same goes for John, and actually I revisited *your* video before doing this one.

Really visually stunning piece of work - congrats!

Andrew, what a beautiful instrument. Andrew not only makes a wonderful instrument, workmanship, playability and tone, he is a great person to work with. He made the OM of my dreams. A year later and I still love to look at and play that OM.

Wow. Andrew - just beautiful work, great burst, and such skillful carving! I think I will never have the funds to buy an instrument of your caliber, but if I did, you would be high on my list of ideal builders.

The color work is wonderful and I also want to comment on the cool headstock inlay. Great job, Andrew.

    Beeyoutiful!

Lost in the praise for the spectacular varnish is also my admiration for the complex curve on the scroll back. I love the way it comes together in the middle, expands just a hair, then comes together again. Great flow to it. I have noticed that on your work before.

    Great Job!

Further proof that Andrew Mowry is one of the best luthiers on the planet. Just stunning work. I've had the chance to play a few of his instruments at the Northwest Handmade Instrument Exhibit (A-style, OM and 'dola) and I can assure you they sound and play even better that they look. I'm proud to be a fellow Oregonian.

Wow. I used to be a committed tobacco-sunburst addict but this tops that. The colors are so rich looking. I realize the target was the F-4 burst but I think you've improved upon that considerably.
