Hereby & forthwith, any instrument with an odd number of strings shall be considered broken. With regard to mix levels, usually the best approach is treating the mandolin the same as a cowbell.
there's a mandolin players group on Linked-In, too, if anybody's interested. I check in once a week/month and see a lot of the same topics come up that come up here.
