Favorite Loar Videos

I'm not sure if anyone has started a thread of their favorite youtube videos showcasing Lloyd Loar signed mandolins, but I just watched this one that I really like. I was surprised that it has a virzi since I hear that many people don't like them. The thing I like about this recording of this mandolin is how the D and G strings sound. I'm not sure how I describe the pleasing qualities of the sound I'm hearing, but I just like the G and D.

That was pretty nice picking -- "Cattle in the cane" is a great tune. On a YouTube recording you would be hard pressed to say that was a great sounding mandolin -- or not a great sounding one. I just don't think those compressed videos tell you much.

Here is another 1924 Loar with a Virizi -- maybe its the same one?

Youtube videos are probably all an insult to the tone of Loars. Which is why I said "this recording of this loar." But it is what it is. I love both these videos!

Hey, I'd gladly take these "insulted" true Loar recordings over any other "insulted" recordings of other mandolins any day!

That JT guy aint even pickin it where it is suppose to be picked and it sounds ok. The second one sounds better though.

They dont call it a sweet spot for nothin.

My favorite Loar video would be anything with John Reischman in it..

Even with cheap recording devices the power of the Loar seems to come through pretty hard. Here is 2 mighty fine examples of the 1923 Loar F5s:

Great show Tom... thanks for posting these! Between Monroe's playing, Marty Stuart's solo and Monroe's "get down crouch" it's pretty hard to beat this one. Also, notice how Bad Man Bill is so cool he takes his left hand off the neck for effect! He and Hendrix had a lot in common no?

Question. This performance is from 1989 (i.e., fifty years after Bill came to town in 1939 -- according to Marty)? So this the sound of the Loar after Charlie Derrington's repair then? Pretty amazing.

Several years after the CD repairs. And Jimi and Bill do have a lot in common in addition to being early innovators on their instruments and both members of the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame. Jimi beat his axe while on fire while Bill had his axe beat with a fire poker. Pretty similar I'd say!

It doesn't matter how many times I see or hear Mr. Monroe play that song, it always sounds great and you can tell he loves playing "Southern Flavor" there is also another version of Bill and Marty playing the same song on the video Bill monroe father of bluegrass and I believe it was on Bills birthday. As far as Loars go I still love that July 9, 1923 Loar even more so when it was brought back to life.
