    I've done exactly one blacktop instrument, and I'm not in a hurry to do another, not even a mandolin ! The color is extremely unforgiving, and any finish imperfections stand out like.., well, a lot! It is also difficult to photograph a shiny black object well, the reflections tend to be either too glary, or not there at all.

    Well, OK, but ... look how cool that is! And also all the mandolins on this thread. So cool! If cool were easy, everyone would be The Fonz - and that would not be cool.

    The best way to check the buffing progress of a new mandola is to take 30 paces outside the shop, point and shoot!

    These black tops are, without doubt, stunning. I was wondering if anyone has achieved such a finish using black French polish?

    I think you would have to FP over a dyed-black top - black shellac always looks dull to me.

    I have done this, but it was a while ago, and not up to current standards, still looked kind of cool though:
