I was wondering if Jerry, David, and Tony ever finished "Always Late", or were they having too much fun? Shame, it woulda been a good one.

Maybe they tried it again when the tape wasn't rolling. At first I thought this would have been an interesting session to have witnessed. But the intimacy of the recordings, especially with the between tune chatter, makes it almost like being there. I figure everything they had, that was good, made it onto the "Extra Large Pizza Tapes".
What scale is this ? B blues?

We do "Always Late" occasionally. Willie Nelson did it, too, but I prefer the vibe from Jerry's little Pizza Tapes segment.
RE: Summertime. Always thought it was Doc who had the freaking awesome guitar solo in the middle of that tune. Turns out it was Jack Lawrence.
There is something there in that one minute of tape, you can hear it. A vibe, a magic, or what?? Garcia and Grisman definitely had a magic, and Tony Rice surely wasn't a negative on the trio. Sounded kinda like Tony thought Jerry was just fooling around and maybe not serious with that song. That would have been a good number for Pizza tapes, too bad, their 54 sec. version shows up on Spotify as the most popular of about 30 versions. I thought I had heard every Willie song, but somehow I missed him doing "Always Late", and pretty good too, thanks.

No disrespect intended to anyone but, in my mind, you can't beat the original Lefty Frizzell version. Lefty was one of the most original, soulful and influential singers in country music. Here's his version...
Hard to imagine Merle Haggard, Randy Travis...etc, without Lefty's influence.
I think Jerry has about a million songs in his head. It almost sounds like he'd never played that one before, and it just popped into the brain, and he riffed on what he remembered of the song.
Yeah, Lefty's original version is great. Another of his tunes we're working on is Gone, Gone, Gone.
