    Default Gibson Oval hole 'A's

Gibson 'A' oval hole mandos made 1900-1927 - it's my understanding these always had a nut width of 1 1/4 inches. True or...?

    I believe my 23 snakehead A2 has a 1 1/8" nut. I have to measure it.

Both my Gibsons are snakeheads, so I guess i won't be able to tell. Actually I have a friend's 1914 F4 -- are those nuts different than the As?

Thanks for the input. I have a chance to pick up what is claimed to be a 1918 A paddle head. But serial number or factory order not available and no Gibson markings on the headstock but with a rather loose fitting Gibson tail stock. I think I'll pass as the current owner is getting pushy about my buying it.

I never respond well to "pushy".

Nothing on the headstock would be right for an A. Pushy isn't good.

My 1920 A has a 1 3/16" nut. If you look at Gibsons from that period, such as these for sale at Elderly: <http://elderly.com/brand/90U_gibson.html>, the nut width seems to vary between 1 1/4 and 1 3/16, depending on the instrument.
