I'm trying to figure out the John Hartford tune Homer the Roamer. I have worked out the melody by ear but am struggling to work out the chords (which is odd, as it's normally the other way round for me). Does anyone know this one and be willing to share, please? If you don't know this tune, it is track 4 on the Hartford/Thile jam on Bluegrassbox.com and another version is available on Matt Combs' myspace - I think it's wonderful

    Thanks!

If you are still out there adgefan, and you haven't already got it.... and FYI this also took me multiple YEARS and lots of help to learn.

The slashes mean the measure is divided into 2 chords. The B part seems to have different endings the each time through.

    Homer the Roamer

    A part
    Bm Bm/G G G/A D D/G G D/A Repeat

    B part
    D D/Bm G A Bm D G G/A
    D D/Bm G A Bm D G/D A

    C part

    D G D D/G G/D G D/G D/A Repeat

dang, thanks for the reply, yes I am still here and I still play this tune (though probably a bit better than I did 6 years ago)! I have about 4 or 5 different versions of it now, all with different back up it would seem. Good to see someone else is playing it too

Perry- that is the version used to pull the chords from, simply beautiful! I had help from the instructor my guitar player takes lessons from to be able to figure this one out. I also have the Curly Maple version and the tile/hartford live versions.

adgefan- do you have any of the other chords written out? I had a really difficult time figuring it out, and am curious about the accuracy. And heck yes - more people need to play this song! (and any other Hartford for that matter...)

Do you guys have the basic melody tabbed out, or just go by ear? Is it in D?

Great tune, glad to see it mentioned!
