    Thumbs up

Has anyone else heard the sound file or better yet played on this mandolin? #I have never seen a Cherry mandolin, although I did hear somewhere that Gibson made a Cherry Master Model some time back. #Maybe you Gibson guys will know a little more. #For being Cherry, it sure does sound nice. #

"The Solid Aged Engleman Spruce Top was hand selected from my personal collection. It was extracted from a forest fire in Alaska , 1934 and has been air drying in a premium environment."

    Hmmm....
Engelmann doesn't grow anywhere near Alaska...

The story sure sounds good though...

There is Engleman as far north British Columbia still today. #Is not British Columbia on the same plane as many parts of Alaska? #

What Species of tree did/does grow in Alaska almost 100 years ago? #Tonewood wise. #I would imagine whatever it is it would have to be Old Growth. #It says on the web site that another luthier gave his private collection to them. #I can't imagine how they could know exactly what species of every piece.

Sitka is predominant in SW Alaska...

I'm hot on the trail of some Lutz spruce as we speak, which grows on the Katmai Peninsula in sizes large enough to get guitars out of...
It's supposedly a cross between Sitka and White Spruce...

Here's a range map for Engelmann....

I used cherry on my last mandolin and am currently building a mandola with a cherry back. On the mandolin I am very pleased with the tone, its an oval hole, has a great mid range, good lows and highs, and a good punch. I'm not consistant enough with my building tho and vary the arching, graduations etc in each mandolin, so can't give you a good idea how it compares to maple as a back wood. That sure is some nice figure on the one on ebay.
    Ken.
    Peace

Engleman was not the only casulty of that 1934 Alaskan forest fire. It also claimed Cedar:

Mama Hen was seen leaving the building with another individual that shared identical login, posting and registration attributes and phony email addresses from the same domain, a college dating web site.

Happy holidays. Back to lurk mode.
