Is a decent woody sounding F mandolin under $700 attainable?
I have a brass body resonator mandolin that I love and I really want a nice woody sounding mandolin to compliment it.
Any recommendations?

I`ve never seen or heard one for that price...However the Kentucky KM-900 is selling for about $900 -$1,000 and it has a nice sound, not sure it could be called "Woody" but it is great through all highs and lows....But it is an A model mandolin....
Good luck in your search...

+1, at a low price point, you have to trade off something else for the Look.
of that Scroll and points. likely the Asian factory does less some where else.
Better to audition mandolins for their Sound, and setup, playability, rather than appearance.

Consider looking for a used mando by Howard Morris.
I have seen them on the Classifieds here for as low as $650-$700 and they are really nice mandolins.
I own one now, so perhaps I am a bit biased. I previously owned a much more expensive mando, built by a small shop guy. It was nice, for sure and I was happy with it until I played a friend's Morris.
I sold the more expensive mando, bought a Morris, and put the surplus $2,100 into our house. And I have never looked back!
Seriously, Mr. Morris is making great instruments at ridiculously low prices. Definitely worth checking out!
No...YOU stand back.
Oops...just realized you were asking about F models. The prices I mentioned were for A-5s...and that's what i own. His F models go for more $$, but they are still very reasonably priced.

If it can be found. Your likley to find it at the IBMA convention or SPBGMA convention. Somewhere that has hundreds of mandolins in one place. Otherwise I would say your looking for a needle in a haystack. Better off to look for an A Style. Much better odds. As far as Woody. Gibson A9's seem to be consistantly "woody" but your looking at 950.00 to 1250.00 ish.
Ya never know. Keep a close eye on the classifieds. I scored a Jade F there a few years ago for $750. Also look for "cosmetically challenged" instruments, they can still sound great. Good luck!

Older Rover RM-75 are pretty woody and chop pretty well
