My Ricca mandolin compared with my old 12 strings mandolin from Catania (about 1930).
You can see how this early (I suppose) Ricca mandolin bears that charming very very old feature (looks like Fabricatore instruments of early XIX !) in the shape of top and body around the base of the neck. (I hope I am speaking properly ...)

Beauties all. I guess I messed that your 12 string is not a bowlback. I have never seen one like that.
A talent for trivializin' the momentous and complicatin' the obvious.

That is similar to the Mozzani "boatbacks" (my nomenclature). I also have what I think is a Lyon & Healy boatback. Here is mine and a view of a Mozzani from 1945. These were just deeper body flatbacks or simpler made bowlbacks depending on your perspective.

Those were from an antideluvian thread that Mick and I shared back in 2006. It sounds like we were just getting to know each other.

Here is a thread on another American-made boatback by Adams.

Yes Jim, it's a "boat" !!! I bought it in Catania about 25 years ago, but no label in it.
    Do you like Mozzani mandolins?

We don;t see them often tho I have played one and it was a simple one like the one pictured but sounded nice. My friend in Bologna has one also but I have not seen or played it.

Yes it's not a bowlback but it is not bat, soundbox being of a quite nice Maple.
I think it was made in Catania, in the 20s.

I think it was made in Catania, in the 20s
which makes it a Costa (Ionian) Ricca.

I don't think the Catania 12-string was made by Ricca. Giuseppe, who was the maker of that one -- do you know?

There has been some misunderstanding ... NO, my 12 strings was made by an unknown maker, probably in Catania around 1920 ... I suppose. The only real fact is that I bought it in Catania around 1987.
The Ricca mandolin is the other one, that without strings, all broken.
