I don't think he outbid himself. I think he upped his bid until it went over the seller's reserve. Theoretically, your bid stays the same until someone bids you up or you go over reserve.

OK, I get it. We just see the end result, but he must have seen on his computer "Reserve not met" for each increased bid until he hit $3000. Probably ebay 101, but I've never bid on anything with such a high price, nor such a high reserve. Thanks!

Again, he must have really wanted it. Hope he's happy, and it's all he thinks it is!

More than likely he worked with a sniping program to insure that he got it. his last bid was 8 seconds before the end of he auction.

The famous person was probably someone famous to a small, low populated haven in the hills.(Where a certain bunch reside)

    Got it!!

I don't know why it took me so long to figure this out; it's so obvious.

    It's Paul Revere*--and he's still in hiding.

    * (That's Paul Revere of "Midnight Ride" fame, not the new guy with the same name.)

That's interesting, I have seen a couple of vintage instruments for sale over the years that were reputed to have belonged to Paul Revere -of Paul Revere and the raiders fame- and they came out of LA. It still looks like "Raul" to me. Raul Malo?

Very late to the conversation - but had anyone looked or studied the instrument you'd know it is a very important piece in the Martin guitar history. These were the FIRST 14-fret to the body guitars made by Martin, pre-dating the Bechtel story commonly told. Only 88 were produced, all custom ordered.
