I think Jr. stands for cannon. I got my model 1 today, I have heard them on youtube, but these are cannons. You need to play one if you get a chance. The best money I have ever spent!! By the way what is the f-5 Jr. going for. any break off an f-5?

MT, that's a really handsome looking mando! That back is incredible.

Don, your 1 sounds fabulous too on your videos on the Tune a Week group.

I think the Gruhn home page said the Model 1s Gils were based on the Gibson Ajrs., which were had birch back and sides until the Loar era when they were (probably?) made with maple like the other Gibson ovals. (I have a '24 Ajr. that's maple.) Modern ovals would naturally be maple, but aren't the Gil 1s *hard* maple, which might account for their being cannon-like? I believe Compton's F4, which Gilchrist has described as "an F4 that thinks it's an F5" (or something close to that) has hard maple sides and back.
    Ideas or corrections on this?

    Randy,

The Gilchrist Jrs are hard maple and red spruce. The ovals have the same transverse brace of the Gibson ovals. Steve's really figured out how to make them monsters. There's minimal binding/inlay like the Gibson Jrs.

mtucker, that 5 Jr is going to keep me up at night. I can only imagine what a monster it is. Yikes!

Thanks for the kind comments, folks. Thomas, you're next. Shaun, dawg, you should have pulled the trigger.

Don, omg, it blew me away, i wasn't at all ready for it, window shaking. it's badd to the bone. can't imagine what it's going to be like with some age.

Steve whooped it a bit, but it needs to be exorcised! gives me the hebejeebies.

Stunning! I can only imagine what that baby sounds like. That is also my favorite finish combo, I just love the dark brown back with the natural honey top, emmmmmm so sweet.

    What to say? Awsome!

I really like the blond top, dark back and sides on an F5... actually a lot more than a dark (or black) top with light back and sides.

Wonder why not more makers do it like that?

Gorgeous mandolin, love that amber top against the dark back/sides on your 5Jr.

Those Model 1's are another dream mando of mine.
