[Review] The Loar LM-520-VS
After waiting more than one month finally my The Loar-520-VS arrived yesterday.
It was very well and carefully packed. Could have survived World War 3 in the package.
Specs:
F-Mandolin
carved solid Spruce Top
carved Back
Back & Sides solid Maple
Maple Neck
V-Profil
Rosewood Fretboard
Scale 350mm
Nut at width 28,50mm
Bone Nut
compensated adjustable Ebony Bridge
Ivory Body Binding
Finish Vintage Sunburst Gloss
Package:
Package listing is short.
- The Loar LM-520
- Trussrod Key
Processing:
Essentially fully ok, but not quite perfect.
The neck is straight.
There are no sharp edges on the frets, loose parts or something like that.
In the cutaway the binding is not very clean.
On the back is a small dent in the finish. But so small that I could not even take pictures.
The inside of the snail is pretty rough.
But no major flaws.
Setup:
The D'Addario strings are completely loosend.
After tuning the second string, the first string is out of tune again, etc. I've spent half an hour tuning.
String height of G at the 12th fret is now 2.5 mm.
Will check today evening how low i can get by lowering the bridge which is way up now.
Maybe I'll also adjust the trussrod a little.
Sound:
As it's my first Mandolin I can't tell how she sounds compared to other Bluegrass Mandolins, wheater she is louder, rougher, smoother, sharper, muddier, has more or less sustain, whatever.
Can only say the little one has a pretty loud voice. And she sounds as I think a Bluegrass Mando should sound.
Overall:
I'm pretty satisfied. Considering the price I don't think you will get much more Mandoline for that small money.
And now to something completley different ...

Re: [Review] The Loar LM-520-VS
After lowering the Bridge string height is now: 1,5 mm for G, 1,3 mm for e but that gives me stringbuzz at first fret.
The neck is completely straigt. Maybe i adjust the trussrod to give the neck a bit of a bow or raise the bridge a little.
