I have come across some very nice black walnut logs and am wondering if anybody here splits and hews their own wood for instruments. If so and are interested in these let me know. There are three logs that range between 4 1/2 feet and 5 1/2feet long and 1 foot in diameter, also two shorter ones at about 2 1/2 feet long and 1 foot in diameter. These logs are in Upper Marlboro, MD at the moment but will be in North Beach, MD next week.
send me a message and we can work out the details.
    Chris

One foot in diameter will produce very skinny wood. For generally suitable tonewood you will need at least two feet in diameter. There is usually some waste wood in the very center, and the sap wood on the outside of the log, so you only have the heart wood in between those parts.

I wasn't sure if it would be good for instruments or not. I guess I could always split it, shave it down and turn it for chairs or something.

How about necks and or overlay material? No one ever said a back had to consist of one or two pieces. The more the merrier I always say. John
