I thought I heard something. Rock and rollers owe him so much. Marshalls and Fenders were and still are the standard for rock amps. According to the Marshall site's commemoration, he was "one of the four forefathers responsible for creating the tools that allowed rock guitar as we know and love it today to be born. The groundbreaking quartet also includes the late, great trio of Leo Fender, Les Paul and Seth Lover – together with Jim, they truly are the cornerstones of all things rock." I had to look up Seth Lover, and learned he invented the humbucker pickup. So now all these four horsemen are riders in the sky. But those hoofbeats will echo across the landscape forever.
It's worth noting for the umpteenth time that no one put the work of James Marshall to better use than James Marshall Hendrix.

For all the nights I cursed your name while humping my 200-watt stack out of CBGB'S at 3am, I apologize. If I'd really meant it, I'd have bought a Twin.

Loud is fun, but not necessary, as Segovia showed.

you still rocking out tom ? I have not seen any new recording from you in a while .
Playing my 10-string mostly these days. Lots of new repertoire, but I haven't had the urge to record. Performing in school shows with the 10 using Ryder pickup, sweet for jazz and classical. Show Monday, will use the little EHX amp pedal with 12" speaker---6.5" cabinet was fine until we added drums. Combining external tone/volume box with K&K preamp for amp tone. Interestingly, the setup seems to isolate ground nicely, don't have to ground the strings.

Tom, I think your ultra-portable amplification solution is the coolest thing.
As I recall, you built the cabinet for the 6.5" speaker. Did you build the cabinet for the 12" speaker as well? How does the larger speaker sound (tone-wise) compared to the 6.5"?
How much less portable is the larger speaker?
It's interesting how appropriate this is to the thread...Just think about how much smaller and lighter Tom's pedal amp solution is compared to the first amp built by Jim Marshall 50 years ago.

Comparison shots of my two favorite cabinets:
The 12" is much more efficient, solidly twice as loud with the same amp. It weighs maybe twice as much, too, 10 lbs. to the little guy's 5 lbs. Started life as a cheezy Peavey practice amp. I discarded the electronics, the speaker, and the baffle board. Had to do little scraping to fit the Celestion neodynium magnet Century Vintage into its 12" internal height.
A little funky in tonal balance, it has surprising bottom, especially if I tilt it back, which increases the coupling between the open back and the floor.
If there aren't drums involved, the Eminence AlphaLite 6.5" is fine and sounds really sweet. I used an online speaker design app, incorporating the published parameters for the speaker.

The 12" has stronger mid-highs, between 2K and 3K---the 6'5" is intended as a hi-fi woofer, while the 12" is a dedicated guitar speaker. But for travel and/or drumless gigging, the little guy is great. 6.5" speaker is rated 100 watts RMS (200 peak), so I can drive it with the Crate amp, but the 12" with 25w is louder than the 6'5" with 75W.

Gotta love the simplicity of design on the 12". Are the controls on the pedal you mentioned? I assume they do not go to 11. I must say, the notion that something that sounds the way you describe it can be achieved with what I guess is reasonable cost, know-how, and effort (none of which I have in over-abundance ) makes me reconsider my current approach, which is severely compromised by the tools I have at hand. There really is only so much one can accomplish by twiddling the knobs on a PA.
BTW, there was a brief in memoriam piece on CBS Sunday Morning.

Read the Oregonian the Marshal was wanting a dirty loud. Leo wanted a cleaner sound.
