    Default rocky road to dublin

im in the process of learning the rocky road but the tab i'm using just doesnt seem to match what i believe i should be hearing. are there multiple versions of this song and i just happened upon the not melody version?

heres the link to what i'm using: rocky road to dublin

i'm still playing it slow as i'm just learning it, but usually i can hear the melody even at slower speeds

It looks like it's missing the first bar, which would be the same as bar 4.

It has the requisite number of bars, but they're "shifted". The last measure should be moved to be the first, then the rest of it is correct (ending on the second to last measure.)

And go slow learning it. You can hurt yourself with that tune.

I agree its, its just shfted. The last measure is the beginning of the tune as I play it. Other than that it a very serviceable version of the tune.

Its a great tune. I love playing in 9/8

    wommbat,

I'd just frget the tab and listen very carefully to the version of this tune that you like. If you learn by ear, then you can discern the many versions of the tune when you play in a session. It is a lot easier to adapt in a session if you are ear bound than it is if you are tab bound.

Another difference to how I'd play it (apart from being in a different key), the second note in bar two on this version is a C, 3rd fret on the A string; personally i'd replace that by a C# ie fret 4 , and same for every other C in it; maybe this is some of the difference between what you're playing and what you expect to here. (This will change the mode from being in E minor in the pdf version, into being in E Dorian, and subtly alter the mood).

I've always thought the first bar in it sounded somehow more like a final bar, and the second bar like a first bar, obviously I'm not the only one.

When we play it at a jam we end it with a repeat of that first measure, and just hold the last note. So we use that phrase as the beginning and the end.

wommbatt, I just looked at the version you posted and it doesn't make any sense to me at all. What's the non-dots source you're interested in?

@galimando, not sure what you mean by non-dots
i'm looking for a version of the song in tab form that matches what you'll find on youtube

Ah, I meant non-sheet music source. Which youtube versions are you looking at?

Dots is slang for standard sheet music notation, as in 'follow the dots'.

These would be easy enough to get by ear if you want, but they're both pretty close to the version that's on thesession.org: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/593

Somewhere I came across a version of this great tune with a third part. I wish I could find that online for y'all because it's a dandy addition to an already terrific tune. It must have been in a print book.

So here it is, performed by a band that has shown up on the Women with Mandolins thread many times. Enjoy:
