    Default Blues mandolin workshop/Devon, England.

Hi, just a reminder - I'm running a small blues mando workshop on Saturday am 31st March in Stokeinteignhead near Teignmouth on the South Devon coast. 2 hours long Ģ10, numbers limited just got about 3 places left. Message me if you want to join in.

The night before I'm gigging locally with the wonderful Jim Crawford
(see www.jimcrawford.org.uk) at The Wild Goose in Combeinteignhead (entrance free!) and he'll be teaching a simultaneous blues guitar/fingerpicking workshop on the Saturday morning.

Here's a leetle bit to wet yer appetites:

    Cheers,

    Have a great workshop, Marc!
If we were not separated by the Atlantic Ocean, I would be there for sure.

    Hi Marc,

I'm not too far from you, but unfortunately will not be able to make it this Saturday. Do you have any other similar workshops planned?

    Cheers

Hi Ed, It'd be a pleasure to have you there but that ol' pond gets in the way.... I'll just have to get my US tour sorted out (seriously our Kirkwood Brown Trio bassist is -he keeps telling us - heading back to Chicago this year and intends to sort out some dates Stateside so you never know!).

Rob, be cool to meet up - I had a gig at The Wharf Theatre in Tavistock last week -which is heading your way! Think we're booked back there on June 4th too...
Anyway, no other workshops planned at the mo. In fact this is the first I've done for a while (last was a blues mandolin workshop at Simon Mayor's mandolin day a few years ago), so I'll see how it goes, but I'd be up for coming down to Cornwall to do something ( was in Redruth yesterday!),
I tend to use FB more than myspace for communicating gigs etc so find me at www.facebook.com/marcowoodwardCheers,

Aw jeez, some folk make an excuse out of nothing!

Talking of which, at least my excuse is a LITTLE better, since I'm separated from Devon by the whole of Asia and Europe.

Wish I could make it. I hope it is a big success despite the lack of attendance from Ed and myself.

Thanks Rob, hopefully we'll meet up in due course.

Ron and Ed - Thailand and USA. Hard to get further apart really! Perhaps we need some kind of video/skype workshop?! Not sure if the technology exists to do a workshop with several people at once with video links all round! (I'll bet it does but I wouldn't have a clue!).
    One day maybe...

    Marc:
Since your upcoming workshop is scheduled for 2 hours, it could fairly easily be recorded.
I would happily purchase such a recording, and I bet others here would as well.
It's probably too late to arrange this for this coming weekend's workshop, but maybe this is something to think about for the future.

I would buy a copy too ! even better a DVD ( homemade, just keep the camera running - no editing to keep costs small )

I proposed that to Jim Richter before but he declined -> too much efford too little time

I completely respect that but for everybody "too far away to come over" itīs really a pitty to miss these workshops.

well maybe someday someone will ... so I keep asking

Yes, that would be a great idea, Marc. What level do you teach these people at, if you don't mind me asking? On another note, I bought a Sam Bush DVD on the strength of his version of Girl from the North Country and I thought he did that really well. Slowed it down, focused on tricky parts, then back up to speed. Hey presto, I have now added G from the NC to my list of songs and tunes (that I constantly mess up... but that's another story).

    Hi,
Well the teaching varies depending on the standard of the participants of course. This session we looked at moveable scales, the pentatonic scale, block chords and playing little moveable licks out of chord shapes by using slides etc.

I didn't video the workshop but my wife kindly videoed the impromptu number that Jim and I played together at the end of the session:

    Cheers all,
    Marc

The trouble with recording and then selling is it might limit the material you can use. Once you get into selling other people's songs or tunes you'r einto all kinds of copyright difficulties.
If you arrange any sessions further up the country I'll be looking out for you. Hope it goes well.

I was born in New York (Mount Vernon). It's just a short swim and a gentle stroll to here from there.

Have enjoyed the mandolin videos you've done... I would be one of your most enthusiastic students if I could travel, but circumstances make it impossible. It sounds like it will be a fine learning and playing experience. I am pretty decent on mandolin and banjo but normally play alone and would love to have the group experience.
