Thanks for letting us know about this. FWIW, you beat a CBS News "breaking news" report on local radio here by about four minutes.

He was a great and innovative musician. But, maybe more important, he was a man of great principle who stood by his beliefs even when to do so acted to his detriment.

    Default RIP Earl Scruggs

I have no details, but saw on the Fretboard Journal's facebook feed that Earl Scruggs has passed away. We have lost a bluegrass pioneer. Pray for his family during this difficult time.

    RIP Earl.

    Just reading this online now:

    http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2012...cruggs.html?hp

Nice early obit from the Times. Hopefully they get an extended piece out later. (They must have a lot of these written at least partially in advance.) Didn't realize that Earl was up to 88. That is a nice long life. He lived it well.

I loved the way he always looked so pleasant. Seems like he was a happy fellow. Sad that he's gone.

I saw Earl perform live at Monroe's 100th BD party in Sept. and I knew the end was near. Still you don't expect to it to happen and now it has. For certain a great infuence in my life from an early age up until now. It was the sound of that banjo on the premire of the Beverly Hillbillies that hooked me and my brother pretty hard on Sept. 26, 1962. I've had a better life because of "Earl Scruggs".

Aww, man! He was the only reason i watched the Beverly Hillbillies, just to catch that drivin' banjo. Besides helping to create the music he helped broaden its appeal and audience. Thanks Earl!

It's hard to think of many other musicians who have had such an impact on both their chosen instrument as well as the genre of music they choose to perform than Earl Scruggs. What a musical giant and one that will be greatly appreciated for the rest of time.
