David, if I want to stain, I do it before filling with epoxy, but I assume one could, and if I remember correctly I have sprayed dyes over the epoxy to even things out. Epoxy can be tinted with dyes or pigments(?), so that would be an option. (Anything mixed with epoxy must be added after first thoroughly mixing the two epoxy components.)
Actually, right now I'm trying the shellac with acetone method Dave (Cohen) mentioned on a BRW guitar and mahogany neck. It's working pretty well, so far, no stain involved on this one. Here it is after three sessions of FP and two level sandings.Click image for larger version.

If you want something less toxic you should try Timbermate, it's waterbased, non-toxic and so simple to use that even I can do it.
Mix to a thin pudding conisitancy, apply with a white or grey scotch pad, squeegee off the excesss, let dry. Lightly sand off any filler sitting on the surface with 320-400 grit. Done. Brilliant. It comes in a bunch of pre-made colors or you can add dyes to the neutral base to make your own. Available through StewMac and a buch of other places.

John or Dave, If using the shellac/acetone, How long a wait before spraying over it? Will overnight be enough drying time before lacquer?
John, Is the binding on the BRW guitar wood as well or tortiose celluloid?

Hogo, if going the wetsanding with truoil method, How long a wait before lacquer? And I'd assume sealing with shellac would do to bond the lacquer to the truoil, or would you just finish out with truoil?
    Thanks
    David

BRW binding with a maple purfling strip. I sealed the maple with a couple brush coats of shellac to keep the rosewood pigment from bleeding over it during the FP process. I haven't yet sprayed the lacquer on the guitar, but it seems to be plenty dry after an over night wait. I'll probably give it more time than that though, just to be safe. It spent a day or so in the case after a few days drying and had no "case print" in the shellac.
