Thread: Bluegrass and hip hop?!

  1. #1

    Default Bluegrass and hip hop?!

Thought I'd post a video of my Perth based bluegrass band, The Seals, doing an interesting collaboration with a local renowned hip-hop MC, The Apprentice.

It's certainly an interesting amalgamation of sounds - let me know what you reckon - bluegrass diehards are more than welcome to comment, haha!

The song is an arrangement of Alex Lloyd's "Amazing" and was filmed in rehearsal (and as promo for an upcoming gig).

Hey, it's fun. I'm not a real hip-hop fan, but sometimes those semi-spoken word rhythms break up and accent the beat/chord progressions in interesting ways. You probably know of Greg Liszt's (of Crooked Still) project the Deadly Gentlemen, where at times he's trying the same thing. He was calling it, initially, Banjo Rap. And there, some songs I like, some songs not so much. Overall, it's a neat experiment. The trick will be to figure out how to make it a natural sounding fusion without being a novelty sort of thing. Keep after it, you never know where it ends up leading.

I loved it! Music that makes you smile has got to be a good thing!

Haha - and if Snoop Doggy is doing it, you know it's good...

I haven't heard of The Deadly Gentlemen yet, but I'm heading onto the tube now to check them out! Thanks for the heads up

Was looking for the "Splendor of the Bender", my favorite song of theirs, but here's Hobo Rockstar

Not a hip-hop fan here either, but I enjoyed that more than I thought I would.

That was pretty awesome. I love that it was all acoustic, I went in afraid it was going to be like a drum machine or embarrassing bluegrass beatboxing.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone!

We played the gig with him (The Apprentice) on Saturday night and it went down a treat! He was just spitting fire on it - such a pleasure to play with someone at the top of their game.

Haha! No drum machine - however, the beatboxing isn't such a bad idea....
