what is the easiest way to tune a mondolin when you do not have a tuner or any other gizmo handy? can the strings be tuned off each other like a guitar?

Yes, you can tune it like you tune a guitar. Tune the 7th fret of the lowest (G) string to the open D string, and follow that pattern all the way up.

I use my wife. She has perfect pitch and can quickly tell me whether I'm sharp or flat, up or down an octave, whatever. I highly recommend getting one of these!

Just at sidenote, there is a program called "AP Tuner" on the website www.cerlsoundgroup.org. It works very well, although you need a computer with a microphone.

A piano or keyboard is a good method of tuning as well as ear training.

You can always buy a cheap pitch pipe , kind of a four hole harmonica with pipes tuned to G D A E, or use a tuning fork. You can find a intelituner for $20 if you go with the PT-2.

I just bought a Farley's PocketTones for Mandolin (for Violin/ Mandolin) from the local instument shop. It was $12.95. Pitch pipes can go flat on you. This has good tones and volume and it doesn't run out of breath and gives constant tones.
