    Arthur Smith's "Mandolin Boogie"
In 1951 when Bill Monroe went into the studio at Decca to cut "Rawhide" another well know guitar picker went into MGM's studio to cut "Mandolin Boogie". Charlotte, NC native Arthur Smith known for his famous 1948 hit recording of "Guitar Boogie" wanted to see if he could get another hit with the mandolin this time. It bombed and faded quickly into obsurity but today if you listen to it he was doing some rather innovative mandolin picking on this take off from his guitar boogie. He was playing his brand new 1951 Gibson F12 and you will note it rings like bells in this recording as taken from the original 78RPM. A few years later in 1955 he would go back to MGM studios to cut a little banjo tune that featured Smith on tenor banjo and Don Reno on 5 string bluegrass banjo. They called it "Fuedin' Banjos. About a decade later an up and coming bluegrass band called the Dillards would record it as "Duelin' Banjos" but this time using a banjo and a mandolin. And then in 1972 another rather unknown banjo picker, Eric Weisberg would cut the same tune between a banjo and a guitar and use it in a soundtrack to a movie "Deliverance" The rest we say is history. Arthur is still living today in Charlotte at a retirement home at age 90.

Interesting. I have been a Boogie fan since childhood listening to an older sister play it on Piano. A couple months ago I ran across this Mandolin version and downloaded it from Freegal Music library. A clean copy , little better than this utube one. Spotify has it also. Now, looking for the tabs.

What is the point of this thread? How can it possibly be of any value if people can't follow the simple premise as expressed in the title? A little praise for the occasional well-considered post could indeed be a nice thing, and a brief explanation of why someone thought someone else's post was deserving would help. So far that hasn't happened very often. Seems to me this is a very specific topic, and tangential postings are not going to be helpful. And as far as I'm concerned, any post asking for tab has no place here, unless it's sarcastic.

Look. I don't mean to come down hard on anyone. This is supposed to be a fun place to be, and this thread could be a lot of fun. But postings in response to a thread are supposed to be made to that same thread. This is a different thread with a different topic and purpose. Let's not get it all goobered up with what are essentially non sequiturs. OK?

My only purpose in starting this thread is have a place where members can put their favorites or what they consider the best posts. Since we are all different and have different views of what is the best, one will not necessarily agree with another's best post choice. That's part of the charm. Not many have contributed so far, but maybe... it will catch on.

Pretty funny, but not likely. And as I've said before, it's supposed to be favorite posts, not threads.

Fine. That could be fun. But posting responses to posts from other threads belong on those threads. They are part of the ongoing conversation there.

Now I'm lost. What has a diet soda pop made by Coke got to do with mandolins? And why would you ask for it here?

They probably think that this is a good place to get it without paying for it--they must be confusing it with Pepsi Free.

That IS a good one. I remember that, and the thrill he so clearly felt upon receiving his much-anticipated new instrument. You can practically hear his heart pounding.

I also remembered this when reading some threads a while back about the horrors of crazing when opening a cold package too soon. Thank goodness that wasn't the case here. No one would want that heartbreak captured on video.

Funny thing is, we haven't heard from him since then. He got an OM too, and that was that. Presumably they are all very happy.

This came up in a current thread about tuners. I like the way Mike succinctly sums up his tuning process:

I've found that by using a tuner for the last 20 years that my ear improved. I'm always in tune and that is what my ear is used to hearing so when a string goes out of tune, it really stands out. I'll tune one of the pair to the tuner and do the other one by ear. When I double check with the tuner, I'm dead on.
That is a good straightforward method and really about all that needs to be said about this (though of course many more pages will be generated, regardless, for years to come ), and should be a great help to many struggling with this enduring issue. And also a well-constructed post, in general.
