We can hash this over and over all we want and nothing will change...How do the judges even get picked? I gave up on all of these awards a few years ago...To me it is just boring, if they go by the number of record sales that isn`t fair either because of all of the juke boxes that don`t even consider certain kinds of music....I don`t have an answer and I don`t think any of us do either....

Anyone who meets the not-all-that-stringent requirements can become a member of the Recording Academy and vote for nominees and winners. There are some voting members amongst the Cafe members, for example, so it's not all strangers in Hollywood.
Here's the scoop: http://www.grammy.org/recording-acad...voting-process
Just one guy's opinion
A guy I know, Seth Glier, was one of the nominees in this category. He and his musical partner, Ryan Hommel, are enthusiastic and hard-working musicians who definitely thought that being nominated, and being there for the weekend, was pretty cool. And yes, you were right - "Paper Airplane" won for best engineering - non-classical.

Your problem is, you think you have enough time.
Aha! Thanks for that, Paul. Clearly there are holes in the system wide enough to drive a tour bus through, and Ms Chorney devised a strategy to work the system - as is - to her advantage. Of course, there is no way she was going to win, but getting a Grammy nomination really bumps up your visibility, increases your cred and rep (regardless of how you got it, which need not be public knowledge), buffs up your résumé, maybe even gets you more and better gigs and more pay at them, even in the bar circuit in New Jersey. Pretty smart on her part.

Just a suggestion to those that say "i don't watch anymore", "it's not fair", "that isn't even music", "they don't have real talent"...
I think you're missing the most important thing about the Grammy's--that you get to see and hear all different kinds of music, often all mixed together (Alicia Keys & Bonnie Raitt, for example), and what millions of people are listening to and paying attention to right now (for better or worse). None of this is to mention the costumes and dance aspects you get to see. Baseball caps and untucked shirts this is not.
Even if you only ever play and listen to bluegrass (or country, or jazz, or whatever) it would be hard not to have appreciated Adele's or Bruno Mars' (both nominated for album of the year) performances last night.

Let's pick!!
Too may corporations and suits involved in music these days. I haven't understood that way the grammies categorize music for a long time now. Allison is a great representative of the Genre. If the Punch Brothers were nominated and won, this thread would still exists, like Thile isn't traditional enough or something. The Grammy process and show has turned into a self-sustaining nightmare that will only perpetuate itself.
Because mine has eight, does that make it twice as cool as a ukulele?
Alison actually won 2 Grammys last night, making her the most awarded living artist of all time with 28 Grammys!!! She passed Quincy Jones who has 27 Grammys.
Pretty remarkable and nothing to yawn at for sure!!!![]()

I agree, too. I am proud of Alison's accomplishments, and glad that someone who has reached this lofty height has done so in an area of music near to my heart, closely interrelated with my beloved instrument. Alison is a genuine talent, and has generated a lot of interest in a style of music a lot of us around here love, and has moved this genre forward and expanded its possibilities, partly through her willingness to do just that, partly due to the success it has earned from the public's acceptance, approval, and admiration. I don't begrudge her any of her success, and indeed I am delighted that the owner of this remarkable record is, in a sense, one of us.
I don't understand why there has been so much grumbling, grousing, griping, and general grouchiness going on around here since the Grammys. It seems quite at odds with the usual genial nature of the Café community. I am well aware that no musician or album can be all things to everyone, but I would much rather see people offering critical analysis or well-considered expressions of opinions about them than the snipping, sniping, and snide remarks that have been common of late. I would really like to see a return to a kinder attitude, one more in keeping with our better natures.

I was at a small live concert (not bluegrass) by a platinum selling, Grammy winning vocalist now out of wide-spread notice but still with all the skills. There is more priceless music than there are awards or even the time and opportunity to take much of it in.
That said, "Sleep with One Eye Open" seems incredible and very important to the genre. (I didn't say "best" and maybe the reach of an artist or a recording is a valid consideration. Well, that or the sales.)
I saw Homer & Jethro once. This mandolin therapy isn't helping me get over it.

I actually liked most of the Grammys. She's learned to work the system like Chet.
