Paul, you can buy a ready made set here: Hobgoblin.

Here is a thread about Dallas instruments with other pictures and some of a mandolin.

From left to right they are named: mandoloncello, mandola, mandolinino, mandolone (the bass), mandolin and mandolo. The mandolo would nowadays be called an octave mandola/ mandolin.

Jim, Those are the mandoloncello and mandolone in Dallas terminology. They, together with a matching mandolin, were bought off ebay in the UK for less than £1,000 a few years ago.

Artists endorsement clearly goes back a long way -- Francia was one of the top concert soloists of his day, and when he moved to the UK in 1895, he was endorsing Ceccherini mandolins. That is presumably the reason why all of the Ceccherinis that ever turn up in auction have the label of the UK importer, Alban Voigt in London (I've never seen a label with "Beare & Son" on it, who appear to have taken over from Voigt by the time of the 1914 advert shown earlier in this thread). Presumably Dallas made Francia an offer he couldn't refuse to lure him away from Ceccherini.

A German mandolin sextett by Meinel & Herold about 1930. All instruments for a mandolin orchestra, hope you like it!

Paul: That is interesting esp the last Vega bowlback ad. At one point -- either before or after -- that same mandolin was called the Vega Abt model after Valentine Abt. Then again, I think vega had some fancy models which they just afixed a plate to make them artist models. I have seen some style 3s labelled George Lansing on the gearplate and I own a Giuseppe Pettine model which is identical except for a gearplate with that written on it.

Jim, I remember seeing ads with Valentine Abt who actively wrote for and promoted the mandolin in magazines. Can't remember which ones, but will try and find more info and the Vega model.

Sorry, Paul... Valentine Abt was a man. It must have been some other mando-babe you saw.

Here's what I found on Valentine Abt. Most of this dates from c1910-1912. There was definitely a Vega Abt Artist Model, though all I could find was the previous ad, which apparently was the same model. He was also an endorser of Washburn and the Dyer harp-guitar, as well as a Gibson F4 player and endorser.

Paul: I have a catalog page with artist models and they show that same one but it is called the Valentine Abt Artist Model.

I think we have gotten derailed from this original thread -- or at least geographically wandered.

Gibson used a quote from Abt in a 3pt ad. They describe him (in one of my favorite examples of Gibson puffery) as "America's Napoleon of Mandolin virtuoso-ship"

I would love to sail on the Virtuoso Ship

That is funny... I wonder if Mr. Abt actually ever played a Gibson in concert.

Checked out that flumadiddle site. Judging by the photo I think that fellow could use a bit more fiber in his diet.
