If this had been from the Orange Bowl, I could see where the sportscaster might have had oranges on his mind. But this was from the cotton-pickin' Cotton Bowl, where the notion of picking has a very different association. But anyway, he is a color commentator, so what does he know, or need to know?

BTW, we do have confirmation from the wiki: When [Collin] Klein was in kindergarten, he became interested in learning to play the piano, and began taking lessons the next year. He would later learn how to play both the violin and the mandolin.

His multiple skills were not enough to help his team win the Cotton Bowl. The Arkansas Razorbacks defeated the Kansas State Wildcats 29-16.

Didn't that guy used to play some sort of sports type thingy?

Like some sort of ball? Maybe it was bootball or something like that.

After I left my last electrical job I'd occasionally stop by the office and the girl who was their purchasing agent would ask me "Are you still making Mandalay's?"

The odd thing about Collin Klein is not that he plays mandolin, but that he lives in a sod house.

I wasn't going to mention that because it seemed like a dirty little secret. Odd what these researchers will turn up when they do a little digging ...

According to the wiki quote journeybear found, he also plays the Violence, which seems quite appropriate for a footbowl player

No, it just shows you how uninformed ESPN commentators are.

Jesse Palmer is another ex-jock with no journalist degree or experience that ESPN always seems to hire. I find them more informative with the volume off.

I heard that it's actually an instrument that is only used in Chinese music.

    There ya go! Good one!

Of course, it ain't bluegrass - eight people in the band. I think IBMA rules max out at six. Nice anyway.
