    Default Just fell in love...

    ...with this band:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-zPp...e_gdata_player

After a year on mandolin focusing solely on bluegrass, I am afraid a whole new floodgate is going to open. In fear of the deluge, but please feel free to offer suggestions of other similar bands.

    Good one.....!
    I stepped up on the platform, the man gave me the news;
He said: "You must be joking son, where did you get those shoes...."

"Your man doesn't sound so good!!"
Miles Davis to his drummer (ignoring guitarist John Scofield, who he had just brought in for an audition)

I spent the 80s and even the first part of the 90s in a love drunk haze listening to and bending my mandolin around bands like this.

    Planxty
    The Bothy Band
    Silly Wizard
    De Dannan
    Boys of the Lough
    The Chieftans
    Patrick Street
    Clannad
    Capercaillie
    The Battlefield Band
    Kornog

And thats just off the top of my head, there are at least twice as many more that another cup of coffee will dig out of my memory, not to mention all the individual Irish and Scottish singers and players I followed.

It was like a cliff I fell off of in 1981 and didn't get back on my feet for over ten years.

    Enjoy.

As my friend says: I was there when there was here.

Love Planxty! I concur with all the recommendations so far. I'll toss in Lúnasa. If it's the uilleann pipes you're enjoying, you'll really appreciate them.

Thanks for the video! I do love the pipes, but mostly wondering about the mandolin-family instruments they are playing in Planxty.

There's a ton of great stuff like that (and I think including some folks from Planxty) on the Transatlantic Sessions, which you can find on You Tube.

You'll get a lot of help in that area as the instrument experts chime in. I just know a little about them: mandolas, octave mandolins, taterbugs and bouzoukis are about all I'm familiar with.

In "The Blacksmith" clip, Andy Irvine is playing a Gibson A model mandolin tuned GDAd and Donal Lunny is playing (possibly the first) Irish bouzouki made by Peter Abnett in 1970, in the same tuning an octave lower. In the "Plains of Kildare" Andy is playing a waldzither and Paul Brady's guitar is (I think) a Yamaha.

Words more true have never been spoken. You haven't even lived yet. Man did you miss out!

If you love the pipes, check out the other band Donal Lunny has spent some time in: the Moving Hearts. Davy Spillane on pipes.

Worth checking out also are Sweeney's men, featuring terry woods (later of the pogues).
Also, some of Christy Moore's solo stuff is great, although quite different at times from Planxty stuff.

I recently my FB page with a bunch of videos featuring live performances of material from the great Paul Brady & Andy Irvine LP. Very much in the Planxty vein but featuring a heavy dose of Paul's amazing vocals. There are loads more--just follow the links on YouTube. I still can't get enough of this stuff after 35 years!

And here's Andy with the Irish equivalent of "Molly and Tenbrooks."

That's a great clip with Andy, Donal and Paul. How do you get the video window to appear in the post? Mine only came up as hypertext...

BTW, Paul, you might be interested to know that last time he was at ZoukFest Andy told us that most of the material on that record with Paul Brady was meant for the next Planxty album (Paul was in Planxty at the time. He'd replaced Christy in '74, having been offered Donal's position the year before but turned it down. Instead, Johnny Moynihan replaced Donal before the band recorded "Cold Blow & the Rainy Night").

It's interesting to imagine what that album - great as it is - might have been with Andy, Paul, Liam and Johnny, with Donal producing and adding some bouzouki parts?

    Hey Roger,

The forum seems to embed if you use the full URL from the browser address field rather than the "Share" address the YouTube provides. Not sure why it makes a difference, but . . .

That period of ITM was so incredibly fertile and vibrant, with lots of cross-fertilization between the various groups (Planxty, Bothy Band, De Danann, et al), and all the iterations of Planxty were of interest. Yep, would have been great to hear the one that got away, but fortunately we have some clips like this to give us the hint.

    1. copy the identity code of the video in your clipboard. The code is that cryptic string in the URL after "/watch?v=" and before the next parameter separator "&". E.g. in the URL of this video, the code is VJNcEgTTCXY

    2. when posting your reply, choose "Go Advanced". You get an extended post editor with a "Tube" button (amongst other tools). Pressing that button raises a small dialog where you paste the code. The video is then being embedded at the current cursor position.
