Forum gets 500 SCAM ATTEMPTS A DAY?????

In another thread, Scott states that the Forum gets about 500 scam attempts a day, and even more around this time of year.

I had no idea he/we were under that kind of assault...

Many thanks to him and the other mods (and rockers) for their hard work behind the scenes keeping this site so safe and honest.

That's forum spam registration attempts. These are mostly people that want to link to things like gambling sites, porn, work at home schemes, etc. Big difference. Many of these are automated and stand no chance of obtaining an account. Those that are or aren't automated then run into another roadblock that I won't go into describing that involves evaluating information that's either voluntarily submitted or captured during registration. The few that then manually register and aren't known scammers almost always leave clues or are from locations where its unlikely mandolins and mandolin players reside. It's the nasty underbelly of the web and no site escapes the attention, but when you get close to a million posts that means better search engine placement and chaos so a bigger target painted. Dan and I specialize and relish in back-end tricks we've developed beyond what I've described here that keeps these folks off.

All of the failed attempts are submitted to a bad boy database that many high volume forums have hooks into so that collectively our job is made a little easier.

I agree with what jschall84 said above. Over many years, I've seen lots of forums go down the tubes or otherwise become unmanageable for me to participate in any longer. The signal-to-noise ratio just becomes too small. Not here. The back room staff here do a spectacular job.

Scott and his team no doubt get an A+ for their efforts in keeping this wonderful community safe and spam free for us. I also like to think that Mandolin Players are a cut above most Musicians, well there is the occasional Banjo Player that makes the grade
