first sunburst

i am going to be doing my first hand rubbed sunburst stain job. I see alot of alcohol soluble and water soluble dyes bing used for this, but all i have are alot of minwax oil based stains. is it possible to do a sunburst with oil based stains, and blend the colors with a rag soaked in some kind of oil, like you would with water or alcohol based jobs? which stain brands do you prefer? thankyou for any help.
