Default Emmylou Harris - Roses In the Snow

I just discovered this bluegrassy Emmylou Harris album that includes her version of Wayfaring Stranger, and also features Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, and even some nice mandolin work by Albert Lee. I didn't know Lee played mandolin. It's very interesting to note the decidedly different tone between Skaggs and Lee on this album. Lee's tone on the mandolin almost sounds as though he's playing a solid-body. Does anyone know what equipment he used on this recording? There's also a great track (I'll Go Stepping Too) that features Lee doing his incredible channeling of pedal steel on an electric.

Thanks for the details on the mandolin Albert Lee played! I was listening to it again on my way to work this morning - really some great tunes on this recording.

I love this album, great songs, great playing, great singing. If you like Emmylou you should check out her At The Ryman CD too with Mr. Bush on mandolin

I'm not at all a Emmylou fan and even I love that album. I had a copy of it back in the late '70s and loved it. Favorite song for me: "Miss the Mississippi".

I'll second that. Best version of Walls of Time -- Sam Bush's intro is incredible.

I thought How High The Moon was on here, but checking the track list shows it ain't. I seem to recall that number being sung by her back then, with S & R on it too, when Picky Ricky picked it cool and hot, like his solo on Highway 40 Blues, same great groove.
He don't pick like that no more.

    Alan,
"How High the Moon" is on her "Evangeline" album. And I agree: he don't.

"Walls of Time" is on her "Live at the Ryman" album, not "Roses in the Snow" But I agree with your comment about Sam Bush's intro.

You think thats a good kick off? Listen to Sammy kick it on Peter Rowans "Last Whippoorwil" Lp. Thats the best in my opinion.

We wore that record out. And about the same time we were wearing out Bonnie Raitt's first, and self titled, album. Recorded at "an empty summer camp on Enchanted Island, (according to Wikipedia and, I think, the album cover.) Freebo does the bass line with a tuba and a metronome is prominent in several songs, but its real soulful blues. Kind of a bad girl counterpoint to Emmylou's image, I guess.
