my dad just went into a guitar store and they had a 1950's kay a shape mandolin. He doesn't know much about them but he said its $400 Canadian.
Anyone know much about kay mandolins, especially ones from back in that era?
how's the quality and sound

Be careful. Some of these are wall hangers. The Kay I found had a plywood top and needed lots of work ... at least that was my experience of several years ago.
You'd do well to save your money and look for a solid-top mandolin that doesn't need excessive repair.

I was on guitar row in Hollywood (7400-7500 block of Sunset) over the weekend and visited a vintage store that I'm not even sure what the name was, as there was no sign outside. They had the usual assortment of vintage guitars, Fender amps, effects pedals, etc. Up high on one of the walls there were about a dozen Kay mandolins, most in the $500 range. I thought it was quite odd.
That would be about 337 U.S. dollars.

I've never seen one go as high as $200 US on ebay. $400 canadian is WAAY to high, IMO.
A better bet would be the Larson A that Thomas Flood is selling in the classifieds for $250. New fretboard, it is a nice looking instrument.
