    Any reason why wood shouldn't be used as a tail piece? I'm thinking Black walnut, or curly or plain maple. I've seen the ebony used but never heard one. Thanks John

    You can see a wooden one I made for my strange twopoint mandolin if you go here and scroll to the bottom of the page:

    I just used layers of wood and inserted brass pins in at an angle to hold the strings. I am sure there are much more elegant designs, but this works for me.
