I started playing with light picks and have worked my way up to a 1.07mm Clayton, which I rounded off a bit and like very much. Better tone than a thinner pick, but a bit harder to play with. Any suggestions or opinions? I just don't care for the lighter sound of a .88 nylon or similar type pick though it is easier to flip off the strings.

I prefer a thin pick for strumming and a thicker one for note playing. Nothing too thick as it sounds too "clickitty-clackitty". I am, however, not fussy as to the material a pick is made of; nylon, plastic, whatever works is fine with me. Then again, I'm not the Queen of the Mandolin, either.(Is there one?)

There are lots of pick discussions in the "equipment" forum. I like "Dawgs", myself. They're very thick, but rounded.

I have heard Gertrude Troester referred to as "Queen of the Mandolin" before, by no less that Norman Levine. I guess that could be considered the equivalent of an official coronation -- at least by some.

Thick, thick, and more thick. Better tone, better control.

U need to try the Dawg or the 207 picks. Friend told me about the 207s and I bought one and really didnt like it at first, but after a while it has now become my favorite.

Thinnish (I like 0.8 mm) and pointy. Better tone and better control...in the context of my favored light-string set up on my favored bowlback mandolins in my favored genre of classical. There was a good deal of chat on a similar topic here and here.

I should have qualified my earlier post.

Thick picks for me, because they seem to work better for me.
Different styles of music may require different pick thickness. I play a lot of bluegrass, and the thicker pick seems to work better for me, in that style of music.

Golden Gates are very similar to Dawgs but slightly brighter (probably because they're slightly thinner and less rounded). #I like GGs with some strings and Dawgs with others. #You might also experiment with the fat end of a regular pointy pick. #That's kind of what Dawgs and GGs are like, but thicker and with a very rounded edge. # The stiff picks were a little harder for me to control at first, but now I'm mostly used to it.
