Met him at Bean Blossom last year. First class human being. I took these pictures the day before he fell in the shower and broke his wrist.
The Victory Trio and Paul Williams played at the Monroe Centennial celebrations in Owensboro a week or so ago. I had never heard them before and was very impressed indeed. I'm a fan now for sure.

Not only does Paul have a super voice which he has managed to preserve well into an age when most tenor singers lose tone and power, but he is a very good gospel songwriter under his true name of Paul Humphrey. I especially like "Stay by the Brook" from his second (current) career and "I Like to Hear them Preach it" from his days as a Sunny Mountain Boy. And I can't get enough of that patented F4 sound from the early Jimmy Martin Decca records!
Paul is recording with J.D. Crow and Doyle Lawson and doing the old standards that they all did with Jimmy Martin, they were on The ronnie Reno show a week or so ago.....is that the group that is called the Victory Trio?....I agree that the F-4 from Jimmies recordings is the best F-4 that I have ever heard....

Apparently the Victory Trio includes Dan Moneyhun, lead guitar; Adam Winstead, rhythm guitar; Jerry Keys, banjo; and Susie Keys, bass. They do all gospel music.
I think those four-member "trios" should be called "quartets," but that's just me... I'd guess the use of the term "trio" refers to the fact that they sing three-part harmony. Bill Monroe used to feature what he called the "Blue Grass Quartet" although he had a five-piece band; difference was that usually only guitar, mandolin and bass played on their numbers, and they sang four-part harmony.

As I recall, when I saw them in Owensboro last week, Paul Williams was backed up by three people, The Victory Trio.

Paul and Jerry are both good friends. Paul is my idea of the perfect mandolin player. The melody is always present, while giving incredible journeys through double stops and harmonies that just work so well together. I would rather listen to Paul as to listen to someone who can play 1000 notes a second and does not have the melody present or even hinted. In my mind, Paul is the consummate musician. Not only that, but Paul is a true believer and an incredible man.
Have a Great Day!

"Sinner Don't Wait" is one of my all-time favorite BG gospel songs. Paul sings it with searing soul.
