Has anyone caught these two in concert? I think it is quite unique and would recommend it. Marshall plays the mandolin in a fashion that seems to have a small part of most of the great mando players in his style.
Meyer plays the stand up bass like a cello at times. However, I cannot figure out the rigging he has at the headstock.
Sorry if this has been brought up before,

That bass rigging is common on classical players instruments......allows them to go even lower.....
I've seen this duo a coupla times.......two complete masters interacting on classical,
jazz, choro, traditional tunes, originals by both of them.. Edgar can indeed play
bass like a cello, he can even bow fiddle tunes. They play great together.
Edgar is going to be touring as a duet with Thile too. I have tickets for their SF gig.

I saw them a few years back. They played in a small church (with great acoustics) to a crowd of probably 150-200. They played it w/o any amplification and sounded great. We were about 6 rows back and could hear every note--though my impression was that even the back row could hear things quite well. One of the best shows I've seen in a long, long time!

Wow...where is the tour info for the Thile and Meyer tour dates?
By the way, this concert was at the Kentucky Center for The Performing Arts in Louisville. I snagged a table down in front. This was as good as it gets.

Yes, he plays with great agility. However, his attempt
at playing Bach cello pieces on the bass didn't work.
Seems all the attack and tension was lost in the translation.
Apart from that I am a great admirer of his playing and composing.

I've got 12 of the 13 (still missing one!) posted on Green & Gray. Here's a link:

I'm not sure why the schedules never made it to Edgars site or the NC site, must be a hiccup somewhere. I did some digging on the web & these are the shows I found.

I also just updated Mike's schedule, more dates with Edgar added, definately a show worth catching!!!!

Edgar is something, the way he drapes himself over that bass, like Dracula or something

I heard him with Bobby Clark and Cathy Chiavola a long time ago; he took a well-crafted solo on ever tune they did, simply mahvelous.

They did a Bulgarian piece I think it was second to last -it gave me chills- Mike's playing was phenominal and the way Edgar makes that Bass sing...... ok I'll quit drooling.

They are going to be in San Francisco this Saturday. Any idea as to what pieces or genres might be on the program?

Ooops, you are correct --- it's Thile and Meyer (I posted this in the wrong thread).

Slightly off topic... the Edgar and Bela cd "Music for Two" is another mind blowing project. IMO no one exploits dissonance and tonic as well as Edgar.

I think i know what you're talking about. It's a lever that changes the lowest string from E to C. Looks fugly, but i guess it's useful for playing Cello pieces or anything that might require a low C.

I have to disagree about Edgar Meyer and the Bach suites--I think his recording in phenominal, altho' as a bassist myself, I think they are better left to cello! Yes, his headstock has a low C extension so you can play lower--the scary part is if decide to add one to a bass that doesn't have one---major operation. I personally feel that Meyer is the best bassist out there.
