    Hi,

I just got my new Rigel A-plus deluxe. I fell in love with this model last year -- held it and played it once and then just couldn't forget it. I've been playing an inexpensive Montana. I really love the tone of the Rigel!

I can definitely understand what people are talking about when they mention their spouses for some strange reason are not very excited about buying new mandolins. My husband keeps reminding me that there were several much less expensive mandolins in the store that sounded equally good (and what else we could have done with the money). Oh well....

Well, Linda, you made a big mistake, see. You never tell your spouse what you paid for an instrument. As much as it might seem "right" to "involve" them in your music, it's a dumb idea. Fuggiddaboudit. Lie. Lie through your teeth.

I have used every lie in the book, and every single one of them works.

"Oh that, I picked that up at the pawn shop down on 3d yesterday. $25. What? No, I have no idea what the word "Collings" means on the headstock. I'm sure it's a cheap imitation of something."

"You know those old cowboy boots that you hated so much? Well, you're not gonna believe it, but I traded 'em for that thing."

"Got this on eBay from some guy in Wisconsin for $30."

"Oh, it's not mine, I'm just holding it for a guy from California until he can get out to the East Coast to pick it up."

"I'm being paid by a potential buyer to evaluate this thing."

"That's not new. That thing has been around here for ages. It was in the closet."

    ...Etc.

Whatever you do, NEVER tell your spouse what you paid for an instrument.

Now, there will likely be a bunch of mamby-pamby dogooder politically correct sensitive types that will come along now and talk about how A Marriage Is A Partnership, and Trust Is The Foundation of Happiness and Communication Is The Most Important Thing In A Relationship... etc. Poppycock. Ignore all those wimps. They know nothing.

Follow my advice and you'll be fine.... I've typically got about 10-20 instruments around here, and my wife can't even tell when one comes or goes. (That's another key, you have to build up a stable of instruments so they don't notice. Use all of the above lies to accomplish that goal.)

    Uh, hope this helps.

Listen to Mark, he has it right.
I have been using most of the same tricks for years- married 28 years, 50+ instruments with 10-15 around at any time- of course most of them are instruments I am setting up for a friend, evaluating, or about to sell on eBay for big bux

OH, thanks a WHOLE lot, Mark.
Mrs. Mandohack was reading your reply over my shoulders, unbeknownst to me; you just exposed all my "secrets."

    Ted,

Mark forgot the most important rule: Whatever you do, NEVER let your spouse see the Cafe' Message Board!
