This thread has strayed far afield, methinks, but just to continue down the "side road": one of the greatest exponents of the "5-string Dobro," "DoJo," or whatever you want to call it, was Alan Shelton, who played for years with Jim & Jesse. This is a just wonderful vid from 1988 of the band playing the old jazz standard Whispering (hey, Willie, is this bluegrass?):
Shelton died a couple years ago. Check out Jesse's cross-picked break on this tune. All that's needed is for Nino Tempo and April Stevens to chime in on the vocals...!

Good stuff there, Allen. Nice mellow tone on that 'brojo, and Jesse's crosspicking looks effortless, as always.

Just heard from Dean Johnson Music that these are expected to hit the streets in Nov/Dec, $599 with a hardshell case. I was hoping to hear some reviews and clips first, but I dunno . . . might have to pull the trigger on this one.
I almost bought a 5-course mandolin (DGDAE) and though about calling it a citternette. Seems like there should be something a little catchier than "12-string mandoguitar" but I guess that gets the job done.
Am planning to buy this. Called Gold Tone to ask if I can take off the low three strings in essence having the low three strings as unison and the high three strings as doubles. They said that as far as they understand, taking off the strings would not change the tension on the neck. Gold Tone doesn't actually make these instruments. They import them. Still want to get one.
the 3 strings per course, setup with different notching of nut and bridge
is another use of having 12 tuners.
