I think it was either Shakespeare or Twain who said that. Either works for me.
A mandolin is a tool, regardless of brand. The player is really the instrument, and the mandolin plays them.

I've met a few players who were tools, thankfully most are not.
St. Paul, Second Corinthians 11:19, is the source; he actually seemed to be saying that the wise can "suffer fools gladly."
I like Lincoln's attributed quote: "It is better to be silent, and be thought a fool, than to speak [or post?] and remove all doubt." But even that's a paraphrase of Proverbs 17:28: "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding."

Ruh-roh! This sounds like the same theme as the thread that just got shut down ...
I thought Franklin said that, not Lincoln ...Lord knows I've been saying that for decades. Maybe I should have taken my own advice!
It may not be the original, but it is a lot smoother. And actually a bit different - Solomon said a silent man was deemed wise; Lincoln said he may be thought a fool, though not proven one until the silence was broken, thus possibly implying he could be wise without this proof.
Oh rats! I thought I had wandered into the Semantics Symposium. This is the Mandolin Café. My bad.![]()

Never Argue with an Idiot, they will just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
William Blake said,"If the fool would persist in his folly, he would be wise." I am still trying to figure out what he meant, but it sounds good.

Using the Bible as a quote source, is not-repeat-not the same as "discussing religion." It's the source of a huge amount of our vocabulary. I tread softly in this area (moderators take note!), but the term "suffer fools gladly" is, at its source, from St. Paul, not Shakespeare or Mark Twain.
Gotta be careful, needn't be paranoid...

Who was it then that said "Time wounds all heels"? Denny Crane said "Rome wasn't burnt in a day".

Heck, the Bible even talks about car brands. It says that the disciples were all in one Accord.

I have read many a post that lead me to think that the author was just that.......BUT I can just choose to ignore the ignorance. It ain't worth my time and effort to get worked up over it.
But I do like reading all the quotes and sources in this thread......also I thought Oscar Wilde said this....probably one of many to have uttered it.....TTFN
Hah-hah! I love the way that forum discussions can go wildly awry.
My original post was in response to missing the opportunity to post to a (I thought), ahem, prematurely closed discussion.
What I was interested in was a philosophical interchange about the idea that the player is the instrument and is played by the tool, which is the mandolin. Meaning the mando itself is far less important than what it produces through the medium of the player.
These are deep woods to enter, I realize, and fraught with peril. Oh well. Carry on smartly!

I've always been fond of "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" although I can't vouch that that's the exact wording. Meaning, of course, that more knowledge is better since serious errors arise knowing only a little...
