I think I have that d'alton lp digitized. I found his Beethoven a little jarring to my ears but. Maybe it was because I did not expect it.

The new CD of Carlo Aonzo and Rene Izquierdo playing Paganini is truly awesome. Wonderful music performed incredibly well. Saw them doing excerpts from this as well as other things in Columbus a couple of weeks ago. Breathtaking!
There is life beyond pentatonic scales.

I'll 2nd the motion on the D'Alton LP. I like his jamming on the repeats, especially on the "D Major". The last section he gets a 'Ragtime' feel going between the Mandolin & Piano. I need to dub it to CD for myself so I can listen to them more often.

I agree with all of the above. Just got the Paganini and love it. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Howard Frye's "Gypsy Mandolin".

I have many favorite recordings but if I had to choose some "desert island" discs, they would be Gertrud Weyhofen's integral recording of the Calace Preludes and Katsia Prakopchyk, "Mandolino Contemporaneo".

So many... I agree with all the recommendations given here. I do want to point out that North's Vivaldi recording was not made with anything like a modern mandolin, but rather a six-course, gut-strung instrument tuned g-b-e'-a'-d''-g''. I also want to proudly gloat that Aonzo-Izquierdo's fine new Paganini CD was first released to the public at their concert here in Columbus. ...And buy all the recordings discussed here! ...And then buy a few more for good measure. There aren't enough of us who do.

One listed here that I do not have is "Haydn in England." Can you share a little detail of the mandolin to appear on the CD, Margriet, and possibly where I could find it?

    Cheers,
    E

An intriguing and 18th-c.-heavy list, Joel.
