You hear that high-pitched whine? It's Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt spinning in their graves like turbines...

Ah well, I'm sure Monroe cringed the first time he heard Elvis' rendition of Blue Moon of Kentucky.* Then the royalty checks started arriving; "powerful checks," Monroe said.

*Actually, according to Smith's book, Monroe and Jimmy Martin heard Elvis' version on their car radio enroute to a show, and Monroe said, "That guy's gonna tear this country up." Right again, Bill!

I played that same song one night on all four sets and played it at four different beats and not one person in the audience ever made a comment about it....Some songs just fit in at different styles and can be enjoyed....

Wow! Proves - as if there were any doubt - that music is open to interpretation.

I have never gone there, probably never will, but I did do something similar to Willie once with "Oh Susannah." One place I have played frequently is near where the shrimp boats dock, and a waitress pointed out a frequent customer, a Cuban shrimper, whose favorite song was that Stephen Foster classic. She gave us the scoop that if we played it he would tip us generously. Sure enough, he dropped a twenty on us. During the course of the evening we did it every way we could think of - country, bluegrass, blues, rockabilly - and each time he rewarded us handsomely. We must have made $40-$50 doing this. Seems he didn't mind how we did it, just as long as we did it.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

Thumbs up Re: bluegrass song in a most unusual style

i love it how music in general -- a good tune -- adapts and changes and re-appears in a million different ways, like a kalidescope (sp?) or a sunset sky. love it.
