    Default Marty Stuart stuff

Thought I'd start a Marty Stuart thread and see if we can find out more about him and his mandoin and other instruments..apparently he has Hank Williams D45 and Lester Flatt's D-28 and a rather unique mandolin. He's been a wonderful adornment to the bluegrass world lately and is a great musician, especially on mando.

If I'm not mistaken, Marty donated Lester's guitar to the Country Music Hall of Fame several years ago.

    Hi Bing:
Here is a great past thread about Marty Stuart's F5.
Included are posts by the mandolin's builder Chris Warner, as well as some pictures I took of Marty's mandolin during one of his performances last October.

Marty is quite a collector of memorabilia. I was at the Country music HOF a few years ago and there was an exhibit of a lot of his collection. Besides instruments he had some guns and stage costumes that belonged to Hank Williams. I think he was on the museum board at the time. I once read in an interview where he stated he had "a warehouse" full of Telecasters.
There is an article about the unique Clarence White "bender" that he purchased from Whites widow. Apparently she was down on her luck and he purchased the instrument and other items at more than a fair price. Some time later the head of Fender borrowed the instrument to recreate it and any proceeds Stuart would have made was directed to the White family.

I have to say, Marty seems like one helluva cool and nice guy. He seems a little off kilter and weird for the genre, and God I love that kind of individualism.

he has one of Clarence's acoustic custom D guitars too. Marty has well over a million dollars worth of C&W memorabila/collectibles and he has a stunningly beautiful wife worth well over a million dollars too. Marty has been blessed a long time.

He always wares a big scarf. Is there something wrong with his neck?

On the video Ed posted he has no scarf on. More than likely it is part of his stage costume. Up here in Montana most cowboys, farmers and anyone else wears one to keep the sun off of their necks (ours are usually silk) in the summer and keeps the neck warm in the winter. Yes I do wear one.

Marty has always been my personal favorite mandolinist. He always puts on a fabulous performance. Everyone can easily see that he is one heck of a nice guy too.

I think there has been mention of this before. But I think it would be so awesome if the Cafe could somehow get an interview with him.

Because of his early asscociation with Flatt and Skruggs there would be so many interesting questions to ask him in an interview.

I saw him say on stage that the scarf was because there was a Railroad tramp that came through his town once, playing guitar, that wore one and he just thought, as a little kid, how cool would it be to grow up and travel around like that tramp with a scarf around his neck like that.
Don't know if it's true or just a good stage story.

He's a really nice guy. Me and my 16 year old son got to meet him briefly after a show. My son was wearing a Johnny Cash T-shirt and Mr. Stuart was kind enough to stop and compliment his shirt and talk to him a little bit about Johnny Cash and shake my son's hand etc. He's a true ambassador of Country Music.
Heck of a good show to!!!

I saw him (unexpectedly) performing with Old Crow Medicine Show at the Ryman in October of 2007. They put on a great show, though Marty's mandolin got a bit lost in the mix. Old Crow puts out a lot of sound for an "Old-time" group. I also enjoyed seeing him on a friend's copy of the Gaither Bluegrass Homecoming DVD. Marty somewhat hosted on that one, as well as putting in some fabulous performances himself, and doing a segment on the Carter Family. I have recently been enjoying his show on RFD-TV. Marty seems to be a genuinely nice guy, is definitely an incredible performer, and his close association with MANY of the greats, as well as his amazing instrument / memoribilia collection would make for a very interesting interview. I second the motion!

PS - Really, anybody named Marty has to be a great guy!

Marty has a weekly show on RFD teevee on Saturday afternoons. Best music show on the tube. His band is unbeatable in all genres and his guests are always cool. As far as playing mandolin, very, very few pickers can touch him. He flat-out burns on he guitar as well. And I don't believe Hank ever owned that 45...

Hank, Jr owned the prewar D45. Traded guns for it with Johnny Cash and Marty got it from Cash while married to his daughter. One of the best sounding prewar 45's I've ever put in my hands. And in Marty's hands it is near prefection on sound and tone qualities.

I've read he played briefly with Scotty Stoneman, when Scotty was probably not very healthy.

I too, would love to read an in depth interview with Martymis Maximas.......

He really is a grounded musician with stellar taste. Look at his 2008 book "Country Music: The Masters" for an understanding for his love of music and photography. The CD accompanying the book is a narration of his influences. Many mandolin shots in a moving over-view of Nashville and country performers. He has many dimensions to him, all nicely revealed.
