Very beautiful modern interpretation of a 3-point. This looks like it has a sort of F5 neck join with the bridge in the center. Correct?

Hans: This is a follow-up to the last question. What is the advantage or disadvantage of having 14 frets to the crosspiece versus that traditional 12 frets to the crosspiece? This would, of course move the bridge forward. What is the difference in tone?

Just another gorgeous mandolin from Hans. It's pretty easy to become jaded what with all the outstanding pics here on this site. Pretty soon we will be truning up our noses at Gibsons and Gilchrists just because they are so "ordinary".

Hi All, thanks for the comments! I'm feeling a very long relationship with this instrument coming on...
This mandolin is actually the second prototype. The first does have a black top (red spruce), Bosnian maple back, and a shallow neck angle as the original instruments had. This mandolin has a red spruce top, rock maple back, and normal 5 degree neck angle. Both have a transverse brace.
I have been experimenting with longer necks on these. The black top has a 13-1/2 fret #and this one 14. The advantage is more manuverability around the neck, and by moving both the bridge and soundhole forward, some tubbiness may be taken out of the tone. This is a larger bodied instrument than the modern F-5...some 3/4" longer and 1/2" wider, so the instrument has a deeper, more resonant sound to it.
Tonewise, the Euro backed one has the red spruce dryness, but has a warmer sound to it. This instrument, while too new to make serious comment, seems to have a slightly harder tone (still dry and fundemental sounding with very clean, clear trebles), but it may be due to the instument being so new. I have a feeling that it will take some #time for his one to come in with such a hard maple back.
I am considering another with an amber top, and also will eventually make an F-2 type. For now, I'm extremely pleased with this one, and I feel it is my little tribute to someone that gets a lot less credit than he deserves...Orville Gibson.
Ah, amber's a lovely color. That classic Gibson "Pumpkin" color looks nice on a 3-pointer
