Hi. I got a mandolin yesterday. It's a bugdet Asian-made, which I understand is known under several names. Mine's called New York Pro and was set up before I received it. I've played guitar for a couple of years but fell in love with the mandolin sound this summer when hearing someone play it at a small festival. First thing I experienced was that the pinky really gets to work when doing that G chord. I hope I will get the hang of it soon.

    Hang in there Anbjorn,
It may not get any easier, but it gets better, and better, and better, and better, and better.

The G chord I use is executed by fretting the A string on the second fret with the first finger ,and the E string on the third fret with the second finger - (no pinky involved!) There are other variations, of course. Anyway, welcome to the Wonderful World of Mandolins!

I'm not too sure if I should congratulate you or comiserate with you. it's only the first step down a long dark road that can onlyend in owning too many mandolins and not enough bank account.

Thank! Ive got an idea of starting right away learning chords in closed positions, therefore the pinky workout. I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do, but in my band I've until now played the rythm guitar as done in ska music, and thinking of using the mandolin for some of this.

Yup, there's a lot of us newbies here. I bought a used Rover A a month ago for $100, but already have my eye on a Breedlove Quartz hanging on the wall at Buffalo Brothers.

    It's a reasonably socially-acceptible addiction!
