As a new guy (at 28 years of age) to bluegrass, the mandolin and such I was wondering, what is the difference between bluegrass and tradtional folk songs or "appalachian music"?

Bluegrass is a specific genre of music created by Bill Monroe and some of his contemporaries, starting in the late 1930s. He drew on influences of "old-time music" (of which appalacian mountain music was a big part)and blues.

Attached is a very short paper I wrote on some of the differences.
