    I should have posted this here first. Definitely curious in your approach and I hope this link works. The notes I'm talking of are the D# and E. on the A string and E string open. OR not. Thanks all John

    Really depends on what fits with the piece. If you want consistency in tone in a run of notes, stay on the lower string. If the note after the (potential) open string is on the lower string anyway, then make up your mind whether you want the previous note to continue to ring underneath the next one (use open string) or whether you want it cut off (use closed position). In many pieces, particular traditional dance tunes, I like the sound of an open E or A string in a fast sequence, especially if the note is on the beat. It gives a ping hovering over the next half-measure or so which adds interest to fast dance tunes (which often involve drones when played on other instruments). In classical music, I think this comes more often under the heading "unwanted harmonies".
