    Default Great Rock Mandolin Videos

I just stumbled across this on Youtube, It's Larry Campbell & Friends (Levon, Teresa, & Amy +). Mr. Helm at times plays the mandolin in fine rock fashion in his solo career and his work with The Band. Rag Mama Rag is a sweet tune he chops on. He tours light and still has those Rambles at his Woodstock home. I dig watching folks play their tunes, Here's a high quality shot of the group playing Merle's Got Me A Woman. Still a national treasure! As Spock would say "Live long and prosper".

Well perhaps they're mando-lite & mediocre, but I can't find any mando intensive clips, Loads of lessons & covers, but nothing great, the SMSB thread has more intensive pluckin'?

I posted this one over in the Ray Jackson thread yesterday. Lady Eleanor was a UK #2 hit in 1972; this is a live version from 1978:

This one has been posted quite recently, too:

There are quite a few versions of Battle Of Evermore floating about, Robert Plant singing it with just about everybody. This one is with Fairport Convention and Kristina Donahue taking the Sandy Denny vocal part, and a different ending from the Zep version. Mandolin by Chris Leslie:

I don't think I've seen this great 1975 Horslips clip before. Fine mando part from Charles O'Connor:

I dug out an old disc and it lead me to chase down some Al Perkins, Bearnie Leadon, & Chris Hillman stuff.

Nice video, My wife was big on Seals & Crofts, She also digs Loggins & Messina so I'm taking her and another couple to Bethel Woods next month, I'll try to check out the museum while I'm there.

That Chris Hillman solo or riff in Mr Tambourine man is really good. Is he doing crosspicking there (down, up, up, down, up, up, down, up)? Anybody got any ideas what notes he is playing there? I can see he is in D and I think he starts of with (3rd, 1st string, 2nd string) 9th fret, open, 5th fret with the down, up, up style to start with. Am I on the right track? I would like to work that into a song but using more cross picking (to emulate fingerpicking) rather than just strumming.

Country rock OK? Good! Here's Cheri Knight from 3/13/98, ably assisted by a couple of her former Blood Oranges bandmates (Jimmy Ryan on mandolin, Mark Spencer on guitar) and Will Rigby on drums. The mandolin solo comes in about 2:35.

When I think of rock mandolin I often think of "Rag Mama Rag" by The Band.

This is the reunited Band (ie, no Robbie). Levon's using some effect, the video and audio qualites are a bit low. Rick is playing acoustic guitar not bass, there's a second drummer along with Richard, but it's nice to see those guys again.

Here's a version from last year. Larry Campbell on fiddle, Jimmy Vivino on rhythm guitar, and I-wish-knew-who on tuba - great solo!

Just one more - The Levon Helm Band from Merlefest 2008. Finally, good audio quality! Check out Levon's funky/folky kickoff- you get to hear his mandolin part all the way through. Also Amy, Teresa, and Larry from his current band, plus Sam something-or-other on fiddle.

Here ya go, bluesmandolinman - everybody has to see this -

Great to see someone rocking out like that on an amplified acoustic. Hang in there till the end - he breaks two strings, gets his second mandolin, and continues to wail, left hand only, while taking a drink! Truly the rock 'n' roll spirit!
