    Default Dead Strings

I have a Michael Kelly that I have had only about 8 mo. everytime I change strings I have trouble with the first 2 strings sounding dead. Even when tuned they do not ring and are just sounding bad. Is there any adjustment or something I am missing? I have been a guitar picker for years but I am new to this mandolin. Any Advice would be appreciated.
