Justus, it's simply Ted's take on scales and arpeggios that makes sense to a lot of us who haven't had the benefit of your training so it might seem redundant to you. The 4 starting positions/patterns Joni mentioned gives us hope that it's not that difficult and we can get it, this music thing, and someday play what we feel and hear. That's how I feel about it, anyway.

Maybe Ted will see this thread and you can get it straight from the man himself.
Breedlove Quartz FF with K&K Twin - Weber Big Horn - Fender FM62SCE
Wall Hangers - 1970's Stella A and 60's Kay Kraft

Whether you slow your roll or mash on it, enjoy the ride.

Another benefit of FFcP is that there are four of them, some of which a beginner may not "naturally" use (for me, it was 2nd FFcP and to a lesser extent 4th), this forces us to see how they work and, lo-and-behold, they magically start creeping into one's solos. Also the 2nd FFcP is a real finger-stretcher, and all of them force you to use the pinky as an equal member of the 5-finger family! Calisthenics for the fingers and brain at the same time.
