Thread: Lower tuning for Mandobird

    Default Lower tuning for Mandobird

Based on feedback to my earlier post (and also based on the fact that one of the big website places has 20% off today only) I decided to try a mandobird.

I've noticed that several other posters have elected to tune their electrics as CGDA, which was referred to as mandola tuning. Is there an octave difference between that and tenor guitar?

That being said, does the mandobird make an effective electric "tenor guitar"? Could you use for jazz the same way I use my tenor guitar or tenor banjo?

And, what gauge strings would one use for the lower tuning?

    Howard,
    I'm using .049, .038, .026, and .013.
I had Gary Vessel put a bone nut on it and set it up for those gauges. And to get the saddle to intonate properly you'll want to hack off the last centimeter or so of the set screw that holds the saddle to the bridge. After that, you're all set.

I've never played a tenor guitar, so I can't say about the tuning. But my sense is that they should be the same. (I could be wrong.)

    Daniel
