    Default Great Dream From Heaven

    Hi Folks,

Has Joseph Spence's Great Dream From Heaven been recorded with a mando? There are alot of guitar versions, most notably I suppose by Ry Cooder, but I would like to hear a mando version. Or perhaps there's the straight melody on paper, not a finger picking version. I know in it's original format it was a finger picking guitar gospel song, but because of it's popularity I thought there might be a mando version somewhere.

There is the Critton Hollow String Band version which incorporates a mando but mostly the hammer dulcimer is heard. Still, a lovely version.

    Thanks,
    Omer

GDFH is one of my all-time favorites, too. I used to play it fairly well on guitar, but have mostly lost that. Seems to me someone here did tab it out and post it. I'd search around a bit.

I do noodle around with it on mando, and it lays out quite well, although I'm not sure I could make much of a solo number on just mando. If you get something good, be sure to share it, please?!?

Cafe member, Jim Yates, tabbed out a version. He didn't post it here, but if you can get his attention, I'm sure he'd send you a copy...

Not mando at all - but John Renbourn's version is my favorite. Saw him perform it a couple of times, and the CD Live in Italy has a lovely take.

Well, the only sheet music I can find is this finger picking guitar version:

My limited music experience -mandolin for 2.5 years- keeps me from understanding how to convert the above to mando, but I intend on playing the Critton Hollow version continuously until my iPod revolts. By then maybe I'll have picked it out on the mando.

Well, if you are interested in another version--with vocals, btw, and I prefer it way over John R's version--look up the Geyer Street Sheik's version. Simply wonderful, IMO.

Lovely indeed, though they've reworded the song. The mandolin playing of Charlie Pfeffer closed the deal. I now have a paid copy of their version.

    Thanks.
